A mermaid birthday party is a beautiful and magical party theme. If you are looking for party ideas for a fan of all things under the sea party, then a mermaid party is an easy option. Whether your child loves Disney’s Little Mermaid or they are just intrigued by mermaids, the party ideas I share below will be perfect for your party.
You can throw a mermaid birthday party anywhere you choose, but if you are near a beach, this would add that extra touch to the mermaid birthday party theme!
Mermaid Birthday Party Invitations
The first impression of your Mermaid party is the invitation. Ensure your invitations include the date, beginning and end time, location, and information to RSVP.
Here are some options for your invitations. You can:
- Purchase standard, pre-made invites and handwrite your details.
- Purchase personalized invites, where you can edit the card online before it gets printed, or you can print it at a print store (online or local).
Mermaid Pre-made Invitations
Pre-made invitations allow you to fill in the specific details for your mermaid party. You order them, fill out the information, and mail them to your invitees. You don’t have to worry about ordering and printing them from a print store.
If you want to add a lot of additional details, this might not be the best option since there is little room for further information. In that case, consider one of the personalized invites in the next section.
Mermaid Printable Personalized Invitations
Printable personalized invitations allow you to customize your invites. You order the templates and print them at home or a print store (online or a local store). There are many adorable options, and you can personalize them to your liking. However, printing the invitations can be a hassle.
You can print them from home if you have a good quality printer and card stock paper. If you don’t have those accessible, you would need to find a local store or one online that will print and ship them to your house.
I find this option takes the most time because you have to upload the document to the store’s online printing center, order them to be printed, and either pick them up in the store or have them shipped to your house. This option is the more costly of the two invitation options.
Mermaid Party Decorations
One of my favorite parts of a party is decorating. My husband would say I go a little overboard with the theme. However, I have enjoyed finding mystical decorations for you to display at your mermaid party. I am hoping my daughter picks a mermaid-themed birthday party for a future birthday party!
Balloons add the perfect touch to a mermaid party. I typically get a helium tank and an electric pump to help me blow up balloons for the party. Trust me, if you plan to make a balloon arch, get the electric pump. It is a lifesaver when you need to blow up that many balloons.
If you are going to make a balloon arch, you can use the tape strips or get a circle arch kit that includes PVC tubing and allows you to make an arch stand. If you need some assistance, this video will help you.
In addition to the balloons, I love this Mermaid Tail Balloon Frame. It would be adorable for the birthday girl and guests to pose with for pictures. It also adds the perfect touch to your decorations.
These mermaid jellyfish are beautiful and the perfect addition to your mermaid party. They are a little delicate, but the dangling spirals are well made and sturdy. All your partygoers will love them!
If you want to add a centerpiece to the main table filled with food or decorate individual tables, these mermaid centerpieces add a nice touch to decorating for your mermaid party.
Mermaid Plates and Napkins
Finding matching plates and napkins for a mermaid party adds a cute touch. Here is a set of napkins, plates, and utensils that are scales and the perfect match with the mermaid theme.
I typically buy rolls of a single color and then have them to use for future parties. I love going crazy with a theme, but a solid tablecloth can be a classy touch to counterbalance the rest of the decorations. If you are interested in doing that, I recommend these solid tablecloths.
This is a great option below if you want a mermaid-themed tablecloth.
Mermaid Party Activities and Games
A great addition to your party is to include activities and games. If you have ones that go with the mermaid theme, it adds that extra touch your guest will appreciate!
You can include activities where all your guests participate in the same activity. You can also do stations with different activities for the guests to rotate through.
With younger kids, I find stations to be the most successful since there are smaller groups of children at each station, so they have more opportunities to participate in a game or activity involving taking turns. This typically results in them staying engaged in the activity longer.
Here are some activities I found that would be great for a Mermaid Party!
When I am hosting a party and trying to tend to my guests, it can be a lot, and I often don’t take nearly as many pictures as I want. A photo booth helps me capture adorable pictures of the birthday girl and all her guests. This Mermaid tail photo booth is the perfect addition to your mermaid party!
Sand, seashells, and a message in the bottle sound like an activity for a Mermaid Party! This Sand Art set comes with small bottles, so your guests can add colorful sand and shells, and you can include a message from the birthday girl, or you can allow guests to write their own.
Again, these are small bottles and tiny shells, so if you are interested in something a little bigger, you can create your own kit. I would recommend making your own kit if you have younger guests.
All you need to make your own sand art kit are:
I love making slime with my daughter, and this Mermaid Slime recipe is a fun and fabulous party favor.
You will need the following ingredients:
- Liquid Washable Glue
- Mint Green Coloring
- Sky Blue Coloring
- Blue Sequins
- Opal Flakes
- Mermaid Glitter
- Mermaid Charms
Seaweed Limbo Game
Grab a broomstick or a pool noddle and wrap it in green flagging tape or extra tablecloth if you went with the roll (cut 1 or 2-inch strips). Then, make the “seaweed” dangle down about 3 feet to create your seaweed limbo stick.
Your guest will enjoy the creativity of a limbo stick with the mermaid theme. And limbo is always a fun game for a kid’s party.
Mermaid Party Food and Drinks
I love creating fun theme based food items for the parties I host. Below I have provided some fun mermaid food items and drinks for your party.
Ocean water is a delicious drink to add to your mermaid party! The guests will love the taste, and you will love how easy it is to make.
Pretzels look like driftwood, and driftwood goes with the mermaid theme. So put some pretzels in a glass bowl or jar and label them driftwood. Then, pair them with some delicious pretzel dips. My favorite is this raspberry honey mustard.
Edible sea glass
Edible sea glass is the perfect way to add candy to your dessert table or include it in a party favor bag. It looks like real sea glass but tastes like delicious candy.

Crab Legs and Sea Cucumbers
You can pretend for a day that carrots are crab legs and cucumbers are sea cucumbers. Add them to the appetizer table with a tasty dip and label them crab legs.
My kids are obsessed with pirates booty and would love it if it was a food option at their party, and I’m sure many other kiddos would enjoy it also!
I remember the first time I had a chocolate sea shell. I was younger, and my mom had gone to Belgium for a work trip. She brought some back, and from then on, I was hooked. That childhood memory still sticks with me, and every time I see them, it brings a smile to my face, and I have to get a box. Having these at your child’s party may create a memory as they did for me!
Use a spinach wrap and make a delicious wrap of your choice. Then roll it in a tight spiral roll. You must cut the roll into 1-inch pieces and serve as seaweed spirals.
Another sandwich-type idea is using a croissant and adding your sandwich fillings to make a “crabwich.”
Mermaid Party Cake
Lately, life has been busy, so making birthday cakes isn’t always easy for me. This last year I bought a store-made cake, ordered a cake from a professional bakery, and also made a cake myself. I loved all of them, and you may prefer one method more than another.
A sandcastle cake would be adorable if you would like to make your own. However, there is an actual sandcastle cake mold that will make your life so much easier than building a sandcastle on your own!
You could also make mermaid cupcakes. After you bake the cupcakes of your choice, you can decorate them with:
- Mermaid sprinkles
- Edible shimmer dust
- Mermaid Tails
- You can use mermaid tail candy mold, and candy melts to create the tails. First, follow the directions to melt the chocolate melts, then pour them into the molds. Afterward, you must stick them in the freezer and let them harden. You then have mermaid tails to help you decorate your cupcakes!
Another option is decorating the cake you bake or a store-bought cake with a cake topper. I found these two that I love.
Mermaid Themed Gift Ideas
I always love to purchase a gift that is the theme of my kid’s party. Then, throughout the year, as they play with it or we read a book about that theme, we can always share memories of the party.
Mermaid Tail Blanket
Every girl wants to be a mermaid, especially one that wants a mermaid themed birthday party. With this mermaid tail blanket, you can make their dreams come true.
The perfect gift will allow the birthday girl to build a magical mermaid kingdom. In addition, they will be able to create amazing shimmering sandcastles.
Book: How To Catch A Mermaid
I enjoy giving books as gifts to my kids and my friend’s kids. You can never have too many books!
If the birthday girl loves mermaids and barbie, this is the perfect gift. A Barbie Mermaid with a light-up tail will please any birthday girl.

Mermaid Party Favors
If you decide whether to give out party favors, know it is up to you and what you want to do. The main focus of your mermaid themed party is celebrating your little one and that the guests are enjoying themselves. As long as everyone is having a good time, that’s your primary focus. So a party favor will be a bonus! Here are some great ideas if you choose a party favor.
Having a gift bag like this one will be great to hold your party favors.

Mermaid Party Thank You Cards
The last item you need for a mermaid birthday party is the thank yous. During the party, I typically ask a relative to write in a notebook about who gave a gift and what they gave so I can write thank you cards after the party.
I usually write the thank you since my kids are still young, but I have them sign the card with some help. I also like to let them color the envelope to add a little something special to it.
